God Provides Daily Bread For A New Convert

Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

Debbie's banana muffins are known and loved throughout our community of believers in Benin, West Africa. Those muffins became the favorite of our Bible institute students. Every day of Bible institute, the students looked forward to coffee-break time where, while informally discussing theology, we all enjoyed coffee, tea, and of course Debbie's famous banana muffins.

One of the earliest memories of those "theological discussion stimulants" came a few weeks after Pastor Michel's conversion. He was working at the pharmacy where he barely made enough money each month to feed his family. Two and three times a week, during the afternoon break when businesses shut down for a couple of hours, Michel would come to our house for a Bible study. And of course Debbie would serve banana muffins. On a particular occasion after we had finished our Bible study, tea, and muffins, he related the following story to Debbie and me. "Please," he started out, "I need to tell you how it is I learned to pray the Lord's prayer. I had been at work all day, and it was almost closing time (9:00PM). I hadn't had anything to eat all day. I didn't have any money to buy food, and I was hungry and faint and weak. So I went to God in prayer. I prayed, Lord, you said in your word to pray after this manner, 'give us this day our daily bread.' Please Lord, I'm one of your children, and I'm hungry, I'm weak and faint, and I feel sick. I haven't had anything to eat all day. Please Lord, give me this day my daily bread." Debbie and I were literally teared up listening to this story. Michel went on to tell us that about a half hour after praying that prayer, someone came into the pharmacy and gave him...a piece of bread. And he acknowledged, "God gave me my daily bread."
